What is Churrasco?
Latin America is home to diverse cultures. This also means that Latin America brings a variety of different cuisines. It makes it the perfect place for food lovers from all over the world. Every restaurant, street food stand, and everything in between provides a different experience of what the food culture in Latin America is like.
You will often see many countries in Latin America share a common dish. This is not uncommon, due to the fact that many countries were once Spanish colonies. One dish that can be found in many Latin American countries with the same name is churrasco. A churrasco can be prepared in many different ways depending on the country. For this particular dish, we’ll be focusing on the churrasco from Ecuador.
Churrasco Origins
We often eat our favorite foods without even knowing where and how the dish came to be. The churrasco does not have any clear origins and the exact point at which the dish was created is not entirely known. Although there is an estimated time that experts think was the beginning of a churrasco.
It was around the 15th century that experts believe the churrasco was in its first stages. It was not yet the dish we have come to love to eat. Europeans very regularly brought cattle with them on their journey to Latin America. This introduces one of the main ingredients of the churrasco. The Latin American people soon raised cattle and incorporated them into many of their dishes.
Churrasco become an instant classic in the region, having many Latin American countries making their own version of the dish. Not only was it very popular in Latin America, but it traveled all the way to Europe. Spanish and Portuguese travelers who made their way from Latin America back to Europe went on to replicate the dish.

Churrasco’s ingredients may vary depending on which countries in Latin America you visit, but there are ingredients that are consistent throughout. These ingredients make the churrasco the favorite dish of many.
