What is Guatita?

Latin American cuisine is vastly different depending on the country you visit. But one thing we’re sure of is that it will never disappoint. There are some dishes that are more recognized than others, but there are a few underrated dishes that we think you might like.

One thing to know about the guatita is that it is Latin America's answer to a hangover. According to many Latin Americans, this dish will cure any hangover and have a person ready for the rest of the day. Although many say that this dish is an acquired taste. For many guatita lovers, it is a dish that you might have to eat more than once to really understand the taste.

What’s in the Guatita?

What makes this dish so special are the ingredients. Each and every ingredient works together to provide your tastebuds with a unique flavor that you can’t find anywhere else. Not only are they working towards giving you a burst of flavor, but they’re also working towards getting rid of that hard-to-shake-off hangover.

A quick review of the ingredients used to make guatita:

  • Cow stomach (tripe)

  • Cilantro

  • Garlic cloves

  • Potatos

  • Peanut sauce

  • Onions

  • Cumin

  • Achiote powder

The main ingredient is the cow stomach, otherwise known as tripe. It is what gives a rubbery, almost slippery texture to the guatita. It is one of the main reasons why many people have to give guatita multiple tries before completely loving it. The tripe really does make a person appreciate the uniqueness that this dish brings. Although there is nothing to worry about for those that don’t like cow stomach, there is a solution.

Due to the fact that many people, in general, can’t really get used to the texture of cow stomach in the guatita, it is common for the meat to be replaced. Some people opt for something they are very familiar with, which would be chicken. Others want to  enjoy guatita as if they are on the coasts of Latin America, so they add tuna instead of cow stomach.

One thing is for certain, it is that guatita is widely beloved by many in Latin America. It brings out a certain flavor that you can’t find anywhere else. Although some people may enjoy it for its taste, others certainly enjoy it for its ability to get rid of a mean hangover.
